Guided Lives

November 11, 2008

Below is my first draft of the game’s rules:

Objective

-The construction of an ongoing round-robin narrative.

Number of Players

-Three

Characters

-Nancy Colefax

-Cedric Ike

-Anna Maria Colefax

Materials

-Three Prewritten Diary Volumes (One per player)

-Three Blank Diary Volumes (One per player)

-One Blank Storybook

-Three sets of Character Biographies (One set = biographies for all three characters; one set per player)

-Three sets of Topic Sheets (One set = 12 months; one set per player)

-Three sets of Activity Sheets (One set = 12 months; one set per player)

-Sixty Plastic Markers (Twenty for each player)

Set-up

-Each player is assigned one of the three main characters.

-After assignment, each player receives both the Written and Blank Diary Volumes of his/her corresponding character.  In addition, each player also receives one set of corresponding Topic Sheets, one set of Activity Sheets, and one Character Biography set.

-The player assigned to Nancy receives the Storybook.

Play

-To begin, players are to spend exactly one week from the time of character assignments reading their respective character diaries, as well as the collective Character Biography set.

-Once the one week study period has passed, the player assigned to Nancy must begin writing the collaborative narrative in the Storybook.  She is the Active Writer.

-After the writing period for Nancy has elapsed, the Storybook is given to the player assigned to Cedric.  Cedric becomes the Active Writer and continues the story where Nancy left off.

-After the writing period for Cedric has elapsed, the Storybook is given to the player assigned to Anna Maria.  Anna Maria becomes the Active Writer and continues the story where Cedric left off.

-After the writing period for Anna Maria has elapsed, the Storybook is given back to Nancy.  And so the cycle continues on and on.

Storybook Writing Conditions

-Whether it be written in the first or third person, the narrative must always be told from the perspective of the Active Writer’s assumed character.

-The Active Writer must always include the other two main characters in each of his/her writing periods.

Diary

-When players are not writing in the Storybook, they are writing in their Blank Diary Volumes as their assumed characters.  The diary can deal chiefly with the ongoing narrative but it doesn’t necessarily have to – it’s more of an exploration of the character’s internal faculties, thus making him/her more of a realistic person and a more interesting contribution to the narrative. Players are encouraged to think of their characters as mere frameworks – they should rely on their respective feelings and experiences to fill out the character, to give the character a distinctive feel and personality.

Topic Sheets

-At the end of each writing period, the Active Writer is responsible for determining the Emotional State of the next character in the rotation.

-Ideally, the character’s Emotional State should reflect the events of the freshly-written passage, but it doesn’t have to.

-At the conclusion of his/her contribution to the Storybook, the Active Writer must write one of three sentences:

*[Next Character] IS CONTENT

*[Next Character] IS MELANCHOLIC

*[Next Character] IS IRATE

-Before continuing with the narrative, the new Active Writer needs to first take stock of his/her new Emotional State, and then must refer to his/her character’s Topic Sheet that corresponds with the current month in the narrative.

-The player places a Plastic Marker in the bottommost box of the column corresponding to his/her current Emotional State.  If the bottommost box is already full, then the Plastic Marker is placed in the box above it, etc.

-The text (not pictured above) in the active box serves as the overarching topic for the next Storybook installment.

Activity Sheets

-If the Active Writer would much rather write under a topic of his/her choice, he/she may ignore the Topic Sheet, but must then refer to his/her character’s Activity Sheet that corresponds with the current month in the narrative.

-The process is basically the same: The player places a Plastic Marker in the bottommost box of the column corresponding to his/her current Emotional State.  If the bottommost box is already full, then the Plastic Marker is placed in the box above it, etc.

-Now, in addition to writing an installment for the Storybook, the Active Writer must also complete an Activity as his/her character.

-The outcome of the Activity is to be glued/taped onto a blank page of the Storybook.

Time Limits

-Normally, the Active Writer may spend four days with the Storybook; ideally, one day for reading the fresh installments, and three days for writing the new installment.

-During each writing period, the Active Writer must move the story ahead three days.  No more, no less.

-The beginning and ending dates (within the world of the narrative) must be noted at the start of each installment.

-If the Active Writer has decided to complete an Activity, his/her time with the Storybook increases from four days to seven days.

Miscellany

-At no point can an Active Writer kill off one of the other characters.
